After the Rain...

Remember how I said Amber and I were going to take a little tour of the flooding?? Well we did, but I won't bore you with pictures of damage that will mean nothing to you unless you know what an area looked like before the floods. Some of our trail heads are now gone, and our favorite creek-side trails are gone also. (I feel rather petty and shallow for complaining about that, when hundreds of people lost their homes and possessions) Guess we have a lot to do this spring and summer now, don't we???Do you recall this infamous picture from last spring (yes folks...June is still spring here in WA)??
You know, the one where I turned away to help Katie and Sienna cross the creek and when I turned back I heard, "Look mom!! I can stand on Bo's back all by myself!!" I think I aged about five years when I saw him...lol!!! Well the picture below is what that spot looks like right now. See the big trees behind Bo and Eric in that picture?? The above shot was taken from up by those trees, looking down to where Bo and Eric were. There is now mud, rocks, log jams, and small streams running through that trail.
Above is another shot of that same area (looking down), and you can see the log-jam pretty well. Right across the creek from the log-jam, used to be a trail head that took us up and out to some good trails. Thankfully there are other ways to access them, but that was one of the quickest.
As mentioned before, a lot of people have had their lives destroyed by the recent flooding around here, and my heart goes out to them. Thankfully this week is supposed to be warmer and drier, so the rivers should be able to recede back to their normal levels. And because I don't want to end this post on a glum note, I posted a picture of Katie's birthday/pony cake that my mom made her. Isn't it just the cutest??? Thanks so much mom!!! Hope that you are all having a good start to your week so far! :)

ooh, i remember a few years ago when the beaver pond in fall city gave out. the engineers working there said the beavers just didn't do a good enough job of holding back all that water. it was more like a lake, and suddenly, it came down the hill, taking everything in its path with it. it was just remarkable. think mt st helens, flattened trees and mud. it went right through the railroad trail (the at&t pipeline trail? what is that trail called? snoqualmie valley trail? agh, i forget.) anyway, the trail just ended in a huge hole where the water rushed through. the hole was big enough for a 747 to park. ginormous! there was of course no way to get a horse through. the county had ribboned it off anyway, but i found a path i thought i could take. i carefully led baasha down this rutted area, trying not to let him fall in the crevasse. then i fell in. i landed on my knee, and still have a scar! i wonder how often i'll hurt myself while trying desperately to protect my horse from injury: )

your pics reminded me of that day. those beavers are so fired.

ps i just saw on the komo news page that fugly points to, that the army engineers at mud mountain released water that caused some of the flooding in pacific. isn't mud mountain your area?

Your mom is a great cake decorator!
Things will not be the same after the flood but new places will be open for adventure and exploration.

What a cute cake and what a lucky girl to have a grandma that bakes that well!
Looks like there is going to be a big cleanup come the spring and then you will be able to use the trail head again, it is a mess now though.

Not being related to the Wenatchee Knutson's isn't either a good or bad thing. I'm related to them by marriage and I'd prefer to freely blog what I wish without it being discussed and getting back to my MIL. She's one of the Wenatchee Knutson-Brody clan (and there are a lot!).

I actually grew up in the Tumwater, Oly, Lacey area. I was referring to Lacey when I complained about the roundabouts. I hate them! They changed all the streets and made it confusing. And I can't tell you how many times I saw someone crash in the middle. And I got lost in a town I essentially grew up in. ALL THE TIME! I swear the city planner that thought the roundabouts were a good idea is really an evil monkey in disguise!

Lytha-Yes, Mud Mtn. Dam is near me, but we are higher than the river (thank goodness). It never floods bad up here, but as the water travels downstream, the town of Pacific gets hit really hard.

Oregonsunshine-Your secrets are safe with me!!! We are the only Knutson family around here who are not related to any others...lol!!!

This weather sucks!! I feel so sorry for all the people and their animals who are being displaces due to all the flooding. And, yes I do believe that a lot of trails, campgrounds etc will be changed after this winter. Oregon Equestrian Trails and Backcountry Horsemen in Washington state do a lot of that kind of work and they are a tremendous asset to us all. How are you guys holding up?? Any problems? We are wet, but are very blessed to not have any problems. And, our boarder horse's mom got a stern message from me last night. I don't mind caring for 1 more horse, it's just the principle that she promised she'd be there every single day to do her part. That's the part that ticks me off! I can't help but wonder if the other horse at the stable down the road from us is being ignored too. He is kept in a stall 24/7 and that really bugs me!! grrr, enough of that. Looking forward to this upcoming drier spell to help with all the floods.
About Tamarack Springs - are you familiar with that location?? It's supposed to be in the Ellensburg area. There's a steep gravel road leading to the wilderness area where we're supposed to camp. If you have any info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!!

OMG- I LOVE that birthday cake!!! Too cute. My mom made a cake like that one year for me of a cabbage patch kid! Are those dolls still around?

The water here has been doing plenty of damage too! My Poppie always used to say that water likes to right itself and no matter what we do, how we re-channel it, it will find away to make back to its own path once again.

I know what you mean about being sad about the trail head being gone. It is sad, and it's horrible that people have lost their homes too. ALl that flooding is crazy!! And maybe when all the flooding stops, then you can use those logs for a trail coarse???

And that cake is awesome!! I love it. THe grass and the flowers, the detail, your mom rocks!!

Oh that is awful, I hope everyone recovers, and with minor damage. I will have to watch the news to see if I can hear what is going on. I know several areas are getting hammered with snow right now. I hadn't heard of the flooding. Stay safe! I came over to give you an award, it seems so little now. But I give it to you because I love you, and you make me smile!

What a cute little cake!! Perfect for your pony crazy little girl.

Wow-what a mess all that flooding left behind. It is sad that so many have lost so much. I would be pretty bummed about losing good trail riding areas too!!

Awwwwww Katie has the cake that I dreamed for as a little girl! It's darling. Your Mom is a wonderful Grandma to make that for Katie.
I ended up with a storebought chocolate chip cookie 'cake' in the shape of a horse's head.
It was good but looking back it kind of reminded me The GodFather....

So awful what's happening in your area with all the flooding and losses.
I'd be sad about the trails being lost, too. Maybe when it all dries out this Spring a Horse Trail Clean-up Task Force can be organized to get all the trails cleaned up and ready for summer trail rides.

Stay safe and dry my friend. (And check out your brave little man. Way to go Eric! Now go get a job in the circus. teehee Poor Mom!)

I am so sorry to hear about the flooding! It is a terrible thing, especially if the trails and such are wiped out. I will be thinking of you! (Has the weather gotten better now?)

What a special cake! I bet Katie loved it! I hope she had a great birthday.
I am curious to see how the flooding affected our feedstore. I am going to stop by there to pick up shavings this weekend. River valleys are such beautiful places to live....but also so often suffer at the hands of mother nature. I feel bad for people who have had to deal with flooding issues. I had a minor flood years ago, nothing at all like what these people are dealing with, and it was awful! I truly hope animals were spared and able to get to safety, too.

Oh man, I didn't know you guys were flooding out there- yes I'm behind in my blogging again. I hope you guys got that dryer weather. It might be fun looking for new trails!
That pic of Eric is priceless! Love that you got a pic of it eventhough it scared the crap out of you I'm sure! I love the look on Bo's face...mmmm GRASS.
